The Life Cycle Of Your Wax

What’s Really in Your Surf Wax?

Ask any surfer what they’re looking for in a bar of wax and they’ll probably tell you two things.

How well does it grip?

And…

How does it smell?

We all do it, before the wax even touches the board, the first thing most of us do is crack open the wrapper and give it a sniff.

For generations, that smell has become part of surfing. It signals the start of a session, reminds us of surf trips, warm beaches and good waves. It’s amazing how one scent can transport you straight back to your favourite memories.

But behind that familiar ritual lies two very different stories about how surf wax is made.

The Traditional Approach

Most surf waxes on the market today are made primarily from paraffin wax, a material derived from crude oil during the petroleum refining process. Depending on the formulation, manufacturers may also include ingredients such as limestone (calcium carbonate) to adjust hardness, synthetic resins and synthetic fragrances.

Paraffin has been the backbone of surf wax for decades because it’s reliable, cost-effective to manufacture and performs consistently in a wide range of water temperatures. It’s what most of us learnt to surf with, and it’s played a huge role in the history of our sport.

Why Does Traditional Wax Smell So Good?

That distinctive coconut, tropical fruit or bubblegum scent isn’t there by accident.

Historically, fragrances were added to petroleum-based products to create a more pleasant aroma alongside the natural smell of petroleum-derived ingredients. Over time, those fragrances became part of the identity of many surf wax brands.

Today, that smell is almost as recognisable as the logo on the wrapper. It’s become part of surfing culture, creating a strong connection between the scent of a fresh bar of wax and the excitement of paddling out for a surf.

It’s clever branding, but it’s also become a genuine part of the surfing experience that many of us love.

 

The Rad Wax Approach

When we set out to create Rad Wax, we asked ourselves a simple question:

Could we make a high-performance surf wax using renewable plant ingredients instead of petroleum?

Today, every bar of Rad Wax is handmade in small family-run workshops in Phuket, Thailand, using carefully selected plant-derived ingredients.

Our recipe includes:

  • Ethically sourced soy wax
  • Bayberry wax
  • Coconut oil
  • Cocoa butter
  • Repurposed tree resins that have already been harvested for other purposes, giving these natural materials a second life

Every batch is melted, mixed and poured by hand before being wrapped and shipped to surfers around the world.

Because our ingredients are naturally derived, we don’t add synthetic fragrances. Instead, each bar has a subtle, natural aroma from the waxes, oils and resins themselves.

It’s different, but then again, so is everything about how we make our wax.

Small Batches. Real People.

Rather than large-scale industrial production, Rad Wax is made in small batches by family-run workshops with decades of experience producing premium natural products.

For us, that human touch matters just as much as the ingredients themselves.

It’s a slower process, but one that reflects the care that goes into every bar.
