Rad Wax x Emily Currie: Surfing with Purpose

I’m incredibly excited to welcome Emily Currie as a Rad Wax ambassador. Emily is not only an outstanding surfer, but someone who genuinely shares our values: protecting the ocean, supporting the Cornish and wider surfing community, and inspiring the next generation, particularly young women and girls, to get in the water.

Emily has supported Rad Wax since its early days and truly believes that choosing more sustainable products shouldn’t mean compromising on performance. Her authenticity, achievements and commitment to creating a positive impact make her the perfect person to represent our brand. We’re incredibly proud to be partnering with Emily and excited about what we can achieve together.

To introduce the partnership in her own words, Emily shares why Rad Wax has become part of her surfing, what sustainability means to her, and why she believes making better choices doesn’t have to mean compromising on performance.

I first met Kate (founder of Rad Wax) a number of years ago when the brand was still in its infancy, and I’ve been using the wax for several years now. Seeing the brand grow from those early days to where it is now and to where it's going is amazing, and I’m proud to be a part of that journey.

Being Cornish, it’s really important to me to work with local Cornish brands that are making a positive impact. One of the things I love most about Radwax is their support for the community; they’ve been supporting the English surf scene for a number of years, as a sponsor of Surfing England and the Junior Team. The next stage of my career is focused on inspiring young women and girls to get in the water and supporting the next generation, doing so through surfing and coaching.

A little while ago, I listened to a talk by someone I really look up to. She spoke about how, as surfers, we often see ourselves as champions of sustainability because we care about the ocean. But the reality is that many of the products our industry relies on have significant environmental impacts and films like The Big Sea have helped bring attention to some of those issues. As surfers, why wouldn't we choose better alternatives where we can? Natural rubber wetsuits (i.e. Yulex) instead of neoprene and natural surf wax instead of petroleum-based wax are two small alternatives with minimal cost implications and in my experience, don't compromise performance.

There's a common misconception that choosing a more sustainable product impacts performance negatively. I haven't found that to be true. My natural rubber wetsuit is lighter and more flexible than any wetsuit I've owned, and this season I've used Radwax exclusively while achieving some of the best results of my career: a 9th place finish at the WSL World Longboard Tour Qualifier in the Philippines, 5th at the Last Frontier Invitational in the Philippines, and 2nd at the WSL European Longboard Qualifying Series event in Ferrol.

I am far from an “influencer” online but I’m aware that I do have influence, so for me it’s important that I am influencing in a good way. If I’m seen using natural products and could make just a few people question what they are using and why, and to make the switch to natural products, then that has had a positive impact!

If you're looking for one simple change to make your surfing a little more sustainable, switching your wax is one of the easiest places to start and it supports brands like Rad Wax who are trying to do things differently! I am absolutely stoked to be partnering with this awesome brand and hopefully making a difference within the surfing community and encouraging other surfers to make a change too.
